A 6.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Batanes early Thursday. The earthquake is the strongest to hit the Philippines so far this year stoking fear in some Filipinos who thing the 'big one' may be coming soon.
According to the United States geological Survey (USGS), the 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 4:20 AM local time and was centered off the coast of Batanes at a depth of 25 kilometers. However, depsite its shallow depth and epicenter under the sea, no tsunami warning was issued.
At least two aftershocks were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). One occurred at 4:59 AM, 35 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, measured at 4.8 magnitude. The other was at around 6:53 AM to the northwest of the province, measured at 4.9 magnitude.
